University Distinguished Scholar and Professor Ali Behrangi

Congratulations to HAS Associate Professor Ali Behrangi for receiving the prestigious University of Arizona Distinguished Scholar Award!

This award was established to acknowledge outstanding mid-career faculty who are leading experts in their fields and highly valued contributors to the teaching, research, and outreach priorities set out in the University's Strategic Plan. His nomination was reviewed by a committee of distinguished faculty who wrestled with the challenges of reviewing the most outstanding mid-career faculty from across the entire campus.

In his award letter, the review committee stated that "Dr. Behrangi was selected because of his excellence in research, teaching, and service. He has reached international recognition in leading efforts to advance studies related to remote sensing and multi-disciplinary precipitation studies. His impact on the global water and energy budget analysis is supreme and he has contributed to the University of Arizona Grand Challenges strategic pillar."

The selection committee was especially impressed by the wide range of involvement and success he has had with NASA. Behrangi has been the recipient of the NASA Early Career Achievement Medal (2016) and several other NASA team achievement awards and has held leadership roles in NASA's international research clusters, serving as Principal Investigator on NASA-funded grants valued at more than $12 million and additional collaborative grants from other sources valued at more than $30 million.

In addition to the official title he now holds as University of Arizona Distinguished Scholar, he will receive an award of $10,000 to further his scholarly work.

We are all very proud of him and his accomplishments and honored to have him as a colleague and inspiration in our department.

Congratulations, Ali!
