Welcome Messages
From the Department Head
Welcome to the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources at the University of Arizona! Our department has a rich history in the field of water science since its beginnings nearly a half century ago.
Please use this website to learn more about our department's origins, our faculty and student community, and the current course offerings and research efforts of our faculty. You can read more about our mission, philosophy, and vision for the department's education and research endeavors here.
We have much to offer students interested in environmental careers that focus on a broad range of areas within hydrology and water resources. You'll find our courses and research rigorous but rewarding. Computer, numerical, and chemical modeling provide a foundation for our education and research efforts in many areas, such as:
-
biogeochemistry and critical zone processes
-
catchment hydrology
-
cosmogenic isotopes and environmental tracers
-
geophysical methods and vadose zone hydrology
-
environmental risk and uncertainty
-
global climate change
-
groundwater modeling
-
interaction of surface and subsurface hydrology
-
isotope geochemistry
-
remote sensing applications and neural network design
-
snow and ice hydrology
-
subsurface hydrology and contaminant fate and transport
-
terrestrial hydrometeorology
-
water-gas-microbial interaction
-
water resources systems
-
and more!
Our faculty are deeply committed to providing the best educational and research experience in the field of water science and look forward to meeting you to discuss your own educational and professional goals. Please feel free to contact members of our staff using the contact form or by using email and telephone information for faculty and staff members in the People Directory Profiles section.
I hope you enjoy browsing our website. Welcome to the new Hydrology at the University of Arizona!

From the HWRSA Student Association
Welcome new and returning students! The Hydrology and Water Resources Student Association (HWRSA) is excited about the upcoming school year, and we hope you are too! HWRSA is the primary student organization for undergraduate and graduate students in our department. We coordinate events for students to socialize and also networking opportunities with faculty, alums, and professionals in the industry. We hope that you will join us during our events!
If you are a prospective student, let us know when you plan to visit campus. We'd be happy to show you around the department and the campus environs. Take a look at our webpage to see what we're doing this week!
