Update on Modern Streetcar COMING OUR WAY (e.g. James E. Rogers Way news)

August 8, 2012

The following is an excerpt from today's online issue of Lo Que Pasa (University Communications)

Travel on and around the University of Arizona campus during construction of the Sun Link modern streetcar project has sometimes made it a challenge to get from Point A to Point B.   Though the streetcar is still months away from completion, several UA-area roadways that have been closed for the past few months are about to re-open, according to the UA Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) and the Sun Link team.

When completed, the 3.9 mile route will expand from the Arizona Health Sciences Center to just west of Interstate 10.  More than 100,000 people live and work within a half-mile of the route, according to project leaders.  Sun Link will connect the UA Campus Areas (Main, Law, and Medical), Main Gate Square, the Fourth Avenue District, Downtown Tucson, and the Mercado District.  It will change the way more than 50,000 students and employees access UA facilities and move about the community.

In the meantime, areas with closures due to construction on and around campus currently include:
  • University Boulevard -- From Euclid Avenue to Park Avenue
  • Second Street -- From Park Avenue to Warren Avenue
  • Warren Avenue -- From Second Street to Helen Street, including the Warren Avenue Underpass
  • Helen Street -- From Warren Avenue to just west of Martin Avenue
  • See the important note in "Current Work Zones" below about 2-way traffic coming to James E. Rogers Way

CatTran route updates and detour information can be found on the Cat Tran page of the PTS website.

Second Street

  • Pedestrian crossings will be established on Second Street
    • at the Harvill Building
    • at Olive Avenue
    • at Highland Avenue
    • at Cherry Avenue
  • These crossings may be closed or moved to accommodate construction activities.
  • The Cherry Avenue crossing will be maintained during home football games until Second Street is re-opened from Highland Avenue to Warren Avenue.
  • When roadways are re-opened, the roads will be paved and the sidewalks will be open; however, construction activities will still be under way and require intermittent lane closures.
  • Fences will be maintained to separate the roadway from sidewalk on Second Street.  Crosswalks will be Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible, clearly delineated and marked.

Warren Avenue

  • The Warren Avenue Underpass will be closed for about 8 months until mid- to late-spring 2013 while construction crews modify the underpass for the streetcar.
  • Bicyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to use Campbell Avenue or the Highland Avenue underpass as alternatives.
  • Bicyclists should take care while cycling near construction zones.  Suggested route detours on campus can be found online.
