Fort Lowell Schoolyard Habitat

Our habitat is located in a central courtyard. It contains our GLOBE weather station, GLOBE soil moisture study site, and classroom gardens. In order to attract wildlife, we have installed six bat boxes, a bird bath and several bird feeders. The habitat is also home to Belle, our Vietnamese pot-bellied pig.

Belle lives a "pig's life", and is very popular with students, staff and visitors.

GLOBE Hydrology Site

Agua Caliente Park is located 12 miles from Ft. Lowell at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains. A warm water spring creates an unusual riparian area in the desert.A group of nine 5th grade students visit the park monthly and take measurements at two sites. We collect GLOBE data on water temperature, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity and nitrates. For fun, we always spend some time observing the macroinvertebrates. This spring, our "Water Bugs" will demonstrate their hydrology skills to other Fort Lowell students as we take larger groups to the park. They will also be training a new group of 4th graders to be next year's hydrology team.

GLOBE teacher Jerry Carney works with students at our "oasis in the desert".

GLOBE Weather Watching

Students took these photos of clouds over the mountains.

They also sketched clouds and used the cloud chart to identify them. Cloud cover and type are measured daily as part of the GLOBE weather data.
