EES: Temperature Treasure Hunt

Purpose

Have the students discover what temperature contrasts exist around their school or field site. Where and why do temperature contrasts exist?

Overview

Measure the air, soil and water around your school. Why are they different? How much do they vary during the day? How variable are they in time and space? Which factor is most important? Is it windy?

Key Concepts and Skills

  • Concepts: All matter (wood, water and air) has a the ability to hold heat. This is called heat capacity. Heat is transported by convection, conduction and dispersion.
  • Skills: observation, description, measuring
