How to Perform your Soil Moisture Investigation

Protocol: Soil Moisture - Weight-based Surface Sampling

Protocol: Soil Moisture - Gypsum block depth sampling

The four optional tasks in this supplement have been designed for advanced students who want to install, calibrate and measure soil moisture and temperature sensors at the standard depths. The advantages of more frequent observations and the non-destructive nature of these observations must be balanced by the extensive effort required to calibrate the gypsum blocks. This protocol is used to estimate a soil moisture depth profile and is extremely valuable in conjunction with soil vegetation and crop investigations found elsewhere in this manual.
